Also I always believed that exercise, maintaining a positive attitude and more were essential to ones well being and body armor. Training really put that in perspective for me and even though I already had a good understanding of this, I felt that I learned more.

the face to face course was nice. doing it online is a great idea since its in the comfort of our house. it is easier to have the learning set up without being in class and its safer when its time to share our ideas and answers. it was a great course
Immersive, thorough, informative, practical.
The role play and group work
Instructor started on time at the start of the day and after breaks.
Clear structure, easy to follow
It was clear and easy to follow

loved the breakout rooms, the different discussions for how to respond to situations by different people from all over the country.
The content and the presenter
I liked that the presenter asked questions and engaged the audience.
The structure, time management, technology informative , collaboration of materials and group participation. Overall very well presented.
The instruction was good and gave good examples
– straightforward and easy to follow – facilitator was knowledgeable and able to explain material clearly – facilitator provided examples and experiences – discussion flowed and was encouraged – the session went by quickly
* the dynamics between the instructor and class. * the story telling * role play on PASS
Steve Horner is an excellent facilitator. He engaged all candidates to actively participate throughout the training session.
Discussions between group and presenter
– helpful information – straightforward and well-presented – dialog and discussion encouraged and flowed naturally – opportunity to put theory into practice and roleplay – health breaks which provided break in content and for our brains
* PASS group activity * Group / Instructor dynamics
the progression of the content made sense and manageable the various teaching mediums of group interactive sessions, videos, shared experiences (open dialogue)
I liked the opportunity to role play and the introduction the safer model. I thought the Safer model was very applicable.
The presentation was engaging, and I especially enjoyed the role play / sharing of personal experiences.
The instructor used real life examples and was genuine and articulate,
I really enjoyed hearing about personal experience and stories. i felt it made it easier to understand. i also liked how when we broke up into groups, the groups were small. Going back to the same members of the group made it easier to open up to.
I enjoyed the facilitators way of keeping people engaged and encouraging discussion. I enjoyed the material and opportunity to practice the skills.
The instructors first hand knowledge and experience as well as the role playing really helped to connect amongst the online environment
All the knowledge I acquired related to how to support individuals that have been impacted by a critical incident.
The instructor was very knowledgeable and took his time explaining things. The Model itself is very useful.
Directly addressed issues relating to suicide.
There were lots of examples, powerpoint, videos. Had time to practice a role play ( 3 different ways). Was given a pocket size SAFER R Model card.
It was engaging, concise, and allowed for a lot of comfort in the class.
It was very informative, I enjoyed the role playing and doing group work to get other people’s perspective on things. We moved at a good pace when going over the material.
It was nice to have options to keep your hands busy. Steve’s knowledge was great, and he took the time to connect personally and authentically.
The instructor was very knowledgeable
Steve is a good presenter. Keeps things light and entertaining while posing questions that explore the functionality of material. Always open to questions and exploring new perspectives.
The instructors knowledge and experience with the material. The amount and length of breaks was much needed given the amount of theory involved.
The presentation was clear and to the point
I appreciate in-class teaching as I get more out of this process. It was a great refresher for me and I learned a few new things. They are all tools in my toolbox.
I liked its uniformity of content process
Presenters knowledge of the material and eagerness to engage the group.
The instructor spoke clearly, understood adult learning, and managed the group in an effective way.
Clarification of key points that were, somewhat, ambiguous. A good reinforcement of the structure of the model.
Measured pace, accessible, appropriate exercises
We practice what was taught to us in the class room in the moment.
Every facilitator has a different background, thus a slightly different approach. Our Instructor was knowledgeable, flexible, listened well and made the presentation relaxing. It was excellent refresher and you always learn something new!
The relaxed feel, more breaks, which led to more discussion among students.
Steve was very inclusive in addressing and answering all questions. Clear materials and great examples.
-Instructor was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Having demonstration videos was very helpful.
I liked learning about the different types of interventions.
I liked the practical tips for conducting a session. It feels nice to know that I am armed with knowledge to be able to help others in a crisis now!
The instructor was comfortable with the material
Material was great, educator was very knowledgeable. Enjoyed the way the material was presented and working through scenarios.
I enjoyed the educational exercises . I felt like they gave us an understanding of what we need to do during Crisis intervention.
I enjoyed the hands on parts the most.
I liked that the information being presented was broken down and for me, it was straight forward and not too wordy. Meeting in small groups throughout the training was a good way to break it up and network with other professionals in the field.
I liked the frameworks and structure this course taught.
I enjoyed all the education. Enjoyed being able to mock the situations.
Relate-ability. Real life examples that were pertinent to setting.
dividing into groups
The content was very relevant. The presenter was good at interacting and having audience engagement Effective storytelling and examples were given to give a clear understanding. Well-timed and paced well.
It was in a casual setting
Presenter was knowledgeable and used lots of real-life scenarios to help with our learning. Engaging slides and visuals
I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation based on the wealth of experience from the instructor
I liked the group discussions and watching videos.
Did very well at facilitating online training and setting expectations.
The quality of information provided and the professional instructor
The approach taken by the instructor about the concepts and introduction of the material.
The knowledge of the instructors.
Personal experience of the instructor was relevant to the work my organization does. Builds credibility as an instructor.
The Instructor 1005 made the content and presentation
Role play and ability to prepare with a team prior to the actual role play.
The instructor set a really good pace and provided adequate time for the activities.
The course material was well laid out and informative.
The detailed information , and how it was presented by the instructor
The activities/practical sessions
Instructor was very knowledgeable on the subject material. Related to his group from firsthand experiences.
its good material and i like having information to be prepared to help my colleagues when called up.
Presenter was very knowledgeable
I thought the material was presented in way that supported effective learning.
-Subject matter presented by an experienced instructor with real world experience. -Opportunity for discussion. -Practiced interventions and beneficial feed back received.
Interactive format of course; a lot of discussion that was open and honesty. The course material was excellent and the instructor was very knowledgeable.
The way that it was presented. It wasn’t boring
All content was covered. Additional resources were provided. Break out rooms to practice skills were helpful.
It was informal where discussions could take place. The instructor was knowledgeable and patient. The pace of the presentation was also appropriate, easy to keep up with.
Our Instructor Steve was a wealth of knowledge! Often time when Ive done courses outsourced for EMS its someone not versed on our field causing a disconnect between myself and the instructor. That was not the case with this class and instructor. Steve was very approachable, knowledged, and kept the class engaged. Its rare to find someone so passionate in their field and it was a delight to learn from him. I will be looking to refreshing this course with him again in the future.
Interesting, interactive. Useful information
Very informative, able to apply to real life scenarios
Interactive group scenarios
It’s was all very informative
I enjoyed the system 1&2 thinking/ logic
Informative and great knowledge
Easy to follow along between training guide and presentation provided by presenter
Great instructor and delivery
The pace of delivery was perfect for adult learning. The conversations and examples were relevant and understandable
Formatting and slides were easy to follow. Lots of time for discussion and questions.
Had great tools for CISM.
Instructor was charismatic and made the material enjoyable & engaging
Steve and his depth of knowledge
The interaction – although it was zoom the instructor kept the team busy and intrested in the topic
Great instructor, was able to relate and provide additional related information through personal experiences.
I appreciated the pace and ability to adapt based on what peoples experiences/understanding was. I think Steves ability to take breaks when he did was incredibly helpful to keep people from getting tired and staying engaged.
Very experienced/knowledgeable instructor
Discussion and presentation of material.
Good “crash course”. Relaxed learning environment.
Interactive Scenarios
The instructor. He made things very relatable and did an excellent job balancing the content vs questions.
Excellent instruction
Discussed a wide range of topics
Having the class discussions and learning from another. Listening to Steves experiences which helped me understand the content more.
Appreciated the breaks as some of the topics were difficult
Relevant material, presented in a way to build to a good understanding.
Very informative with slides that broke down the information into more easily digestible sections. The pocket/wallet cards are also immensely helpful for those of us that will not be doing this on a regular basis (hopefully).
examples and scenarios, as well as instructor knowledge and experience
Knowledge of instructor
The presentation was very in-depth and comprehensive across a wide band of users. I appreciated how Steve adapted the material to support the particular issues miners face. I was brand new to this kind of training and the course itself was linear and easy to follow. The facilitator drove it home with his own and others’ experiences. The role playing was very helpful.
I felt the pace was well handled and the material was strong
I liked that it was kept fairly simple and that it did not involve actually talking about everyone’s personal experience with trauma. I was worried that the training was going to end up being filled with people trauma dumping (for a lack of better words). By the instructor not sharing too much of their experiences (which I’m sure they have) I think they set the tone on what we were there to focus on.
i like that the instructor knew his information
The conversations we had about the content and real life scenarios within our working context. I feel the course is extremely helpful for anyone who works in environments where there are CI.
I was looking forward to learn more about the Advanced CISM process for group intervention. It was nice to be able to confirm or challenge at times what we do and how we proceed in our organization.
Steve had a challenging group to work with. We were large, online and quiet. It took some time to break the ice, but he was patient and I appreciated how it played out on day 2.
It flowed freely and allowed for discussion
the questions that prompted good discussions.
Interactive Conversation around Topics
Steve’s cadence was absolutely perfect, I felt that I could follow along easily and was able to understand his presentation very well.
Steve’s knowledge and sense of humor
Steve was calm and engaging. Created a safe place for every participant to engage. H8s knowledge of the ICISF. Materials and relevant experience made it easy to follow
I like that there was a lot of interaction and wasn’t all just slides and reading through the manual.
The knowledge of the facilitator
collaboration with other participants
Steve is really good at sharing this knowledge and made it very easy for us to integrate the content
It neatly brought together a whole lot of information and activities that I was looking for to further my knowledge and skills of CISM
Steve ensured the material was engaging, with lots of discussion and time to share our thoughts
Most courses where you have group activities where you break apart from the main learning were of not much value to me. With this course that was not the case. The structured way this was handled was excellent and gave us an opportunity to try the things we were learning and having an observer give feedback made it a great resource
I liked the examples given. It helped me understand how to put theory into practice
The presenters were awesome!
interactive, good discussion
both instructors were well prepared, knew the material and very effective in delivering the product/information
Facilitators were knowledgeable and engaging. It was delivered in an easy to follow format and provided opportunity for discussion and mock scenarios. As this was virtual I appreciated the built in breaks to step away for the computer screen.

Additional Participant Feedback

Selected comments from “liked least” and “additional comments” fields — provided for context, not recommended for direct marketing use.

I think we could have done some of the presentation on our own. Less reading a presentation time. But it was fine. Just trying to find something I liked less.
Zoom call set-up (although I know it was necessary due to the timing of our course).
How out of date some of the info was. The Videos were a little painful to watch and sometimes contradicted what our instructor had told us as advice had changed since the videos were produced. The powerpoint was also not very appealing and quite old fashioned.
The video’s need some updating.
It was all very good!
Was not particularly informative (i.e. not new information) for mental health professionals. Took the training as part of CISM, not realizing in advance that it was not CISM-specific training.
The review and video about brain functioning, it was quite clinical and not easy for me to follow, did not hold my attention.
I expected more from the course; I was disappointed
It was missing debrief and unstructured time to provide scenarios of things we’ve dealt with since receiving the original training and having our counterparts chime in on ideas of how to. Out team now has baggage after doing CISM for a few years and thought there would be added value in bouncing experience within the room.
I am not a big fan of exercises- group work and I just prefer to listen to the information. I realise that the exercices have their function but I am just not a fan of it.
Not Corrections specific but rounded enough that it wasn’t really an issue.
It was a little bit short, I would have liked to have more time in really learning the material and practicing
I have no complaints
I feel like in ‘scenario’ based situations things don’t feel as natural as they would in a real life situation, but that is unavoidable and the practice is necessary.
Workbooks and slides were not always in sync.
some material repetitive
Nothing, it was a great presentation!
Not much can be send in this area as for me it was very well planned.
very fast paced, hard to keep up with the material
I don’t care for the smudging part because if anyone needs that it should be done in private, not in the training.
I wish there was more emphasis on community work
That the presentation was relevant to every day life.
i I found 3 days was to much
I believe the content could have been delivered in 2 days rather than 3
Really not a thing maybe could be only 2 days instead of 3 days
This was an elementary or introductory course. Me and my team mates were expecting preparation and follow thru on major crisis and/or community trauma. Good course for those not already doing the work – would be good for new hires
some of the slides need updating
Images/eye appeal of the powerpoint
Not Indigenous based and failed to incorporate traditional Indigenous knowledge into the process
content did not match the slides. the slides are too wordy
I like that mental health was discussed and a large focus, I think that is needed; however, as I have a professional background in mental health, I did not take away much from this assisting individuals course. I gained more from the group crisis training. That is just a personal thing though.
links from instructor to book material
The only criticism, is the slides were not connected entirely to the hand out material. I am a note taker, and had a hard time finding and following the information shown on the slides.
Not enough practical suggestions of how to actually put the skills into practice properly within our institutions and the prison set-up/layout/routine/culture.
role plays are always difficult as many participants go off in tangents during the debriefing afterwards.
Lack of understanding of a correctional environment
i dont know if i had anything least about anything
It was too short, would’ve been great if it was a week workshop
Nothing, some topics were touching like Suicide.
I cannot think of anything that I did not like about the presentation or the material.
The pace, it was not consistent, too slow and then rushed at the end.
Online format, lack of depth and examples in the content
The first day was a bit dry, the theory is needed but I would have liked more practical or group worked mixed in throughout.
The visuals and opportunities to participate through zoom were lacking
Two days over zoom was exhausting, and I found I lost focus often. I understand the nature of the training is hard to deliver in person but I just really struggle to stay engaged in zoom trainings.
The group and I were expecting more information on the process of diffusing and debriefing for individuals, given that large group debriefs are not appropriate nor possible for our organization and the nature of our work. Our leadership is heavily trained in crisis intervention and the science behind the body/brain response to trauma, so the course felt introductory. The material in day 2 was more in line with our needs, but still didn’t offer details for best debriefing practice (e.g., timeframes/time of intervention)
The presentation did not match the course material that I downloaded and printed. I appreciate when these match and I can listen to the presenter and make notes on the printed pages in my hands. Steve was great about providing handouts from the current presentation afterwards so this was helpful. However, overall I find it very frustrating and difficult to focus when the presentation does not match the hand out!!
Early start time LOL 630AM Alberta time
I found there to be a lot of material in a relatively short amount of time. At times there was “information overload”.
Confusing information between the presentation, workbook and guidebooks. It was often hard to follow along and take notes.
Content is getting old, and needs updated. The videos are terrible. Contact our group if you ever want to re-shoot 🙂 – we did a great job in our practice groups
Some of the group debrief didn’t feel relevant as a clinician would be facilitating
Need to incorporate a clear plan about assessing people if suicidal and what to do in that moment
I found the content could have been presented in a better way. Even with the printed PDF there was no flow to the content.
Lots of content, and a little bit overwhelmed.
Nothing. I thought it was well done. In person would’ve been easier – virtual training is always a bit more difficult.
The fact it was on Zoom.
The training being presented through Zoom.
Would prefer in-person over virtual, but again, excellent training.
Nothing, all was good!!
It seemed disorganized at times and I feel the course would have been more beneficial with more scenarios to see the material in action.
It was a long three days of sitting in a classroom and it felt like the material could have been condensed.
material was not condensed enough.
I found the 3 days very long. The first day of the training was fairly basic review for mental health professionals, but I can understand that this is important information to review.
monotone voice, length of course- drawn out to much
presentation and material did not match up at times
the first two days could have been online for healthcare workers who do individual crisis intervention on a daily basis.
I found that the presentation was ik. If I had the book materials prior to the course, it would have been much better
I think it could’ve been a little more targeted to the professions taking the class.
The length. I think most of us had the entry level intro.
It was long over 3 days, would have enjoyed more group time
An FM system/microphone would have been useful since it was a bit hard to hear everything.
A lot of audible learning/lecturing
I enjoyed all of the presentation.
the presentation, including slides and content were not connected to the manual’s. References appeared to be instructor’s personal choice rather then concurrent with the content references around effectiveness and efficacy of the program were very old and out dated
I found the days to be long, and thought that perhaps more practice of the group debrief could have been beneficial.
The course seem weighted in the wrong direction. We spent a lot of time on the individual work and too little on critical incident training for groups. That section felt rushed.
I wish it was a bit more structured and more theory based. We spent a lot of time on introductions but very little time on anything else. I also wish that there was somewhat less time spent on the individual model.
Not so much about the presentation, I just didn’t know how my employer planned to use, so examples related to my workplace would be useful.
In our group it was people who are skilled in these areas at baseline with trauma experience and experience caring for people who have endured trauma, so being able to shift gears a bit in the presentation would have been helpful!
